We’ve got lots of look forward to this summer as The Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games take place in London. Unsurprisingly the run up to these festivities has brought a host of celebratory artwork.

In April Buckingham Place was lit up with fantastic self-portraits from school children which together created portraits of The Queen and this weekend the Olympic memory boat ‘Collective Spirit’ was launched in Emsworth, Hampshire.

The boat created by the artist duo Lone Twin, offers a unique twist as it’s made solely out of wooden objects donated to the project. The Lone Twin artists Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters managed to secure famous items including a Jimi Hendrix guitar, wood taken from Mary Rose and a prestigious wooden plank from London 2012 Veldrome.

Alongside these high profile items Collective Spirit was lucky enough to receive nearly 1,200 items donated by the general public, which have helped make the majority of the boat- each item having a story behind it. Donations included everything from wooden hockey sticks, wooden spoons, musical instruments, wooden coat hooks, a Victorian police truncheon and even small simple items like a writing pencil and a wooden peg.

Together the pieces have created a fantastic yacht which has a thousand stories to tell and a real sense of community. This weekend over 1000 visitors turned out for the Collective Spirit’s launch in Hampshire, many visitors looking to see where their treasured item has been positioned on the boat, which I imagine was incredibly exciting.

I’m fascinated to see how each item has been so skilfully crafted together to create a real working boat which will soon sail around the South Coast including Margate, Brighton, Hastings and Portsmouth in the run up to the Olympic Games where hopefully thousands of people will be able to catch a glimpse of the Collective Spirit and enjoy its brilliant creativity.

Sizzix-Online Craft StoreI came across http://www.Sizzix.co.uk after seeing a selection of beautifully designed Sizzix patterned paper in a craft magazine. To my delight the Sizzix website is a wonderland for craft lovers like me as it’s packed with creative ideas, products and even features a quilting section complete with patterns- need I say more?

The best thing about Sizzix’s website is it’s free downloadable packs which will get your creativity buds flowing and enable you to create beautiful cards, scrapbooks, gift tags, invites and everything in between.

Capitalising on The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the small matter of street parties, family gatherings and generally lots of celebrations, Sizzix have come up with a range of jubilee inspired paper that is free to download and will add a touch of creative magic to any jubilee party. I’m considering turning my patterned paper into homemade bunting that’s fit for a queen.

Face Britain- Face Britain, a self-portrait art project aimed at children, lit up Buckingham Palace last night as montages of the Queen have been created with over 200,000 school children’s self –portraits to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

Set up by The Princes’ Foundation for Children and the Arts, Face Britain wanted to encourage as many children as possible to create a self-portrait and published them all in an online gallery. The deadline for submission has passed but the website is fantastic to visit nevertheless.

Bright, fun and interactive www.FaceBritain.org features a wonderful online gallery and has an interactive canvas which enables users to join in the fun and draw themselves online. But what I like most about the website is how visually exciting it is. Set out it artistic frames and filled with bright colours it’s a website which will please everyone and is perfect for grandchildren.

Along with fantastic contributions from school children the site also features celebrity art work from a number of famous faces who’ve shown their support. View ‘Famous Faces’ to see self-portraits of Adele, Quentin Blake, Cilla Black and Derren Brown.

All in all www.facebritain.co.uk is a brilliant website which reflects all of the enthusiasm and creativity which so many school children have put into the Face Britain project; a site which is most definitely worth visiting.

As a grandparent there is nothing sweeter than receiving a drawing or sketch from a grandchild. I’ve got several of my grandchildren’s portraits in the office and always get a great sense of joy from seeing them each morning.

So when I saw that Buckingham Palace is being lit up with portraits of the Queen, created by montages of over 200,000 self-portraits drawn by school children across Britain, I was delighted.

The ‘Face Britain’ campaign was created by Prince Charles’ Foundation for Children and the Arts and challenged children aged 4-16 to create their own self-portraits. Together the portraits have assembled a vibrant and charming art installing of The Queen for her Diamond Jubilee.

The art work is currently being projected onto the front of Buckingham Palace each evening until Saturday and could potentially set a Guinness World Record for the most artists to work on the same art installation.

A fantastic addition to The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and rumour has it that The Queen really likes the installation.

To round up my week all about Naidex National I’m going to write a little more about The Mouth and Foot Painting Artists who were exhibiting at the event.

I was taken aback by the art work which The MFPA had on display and decided to purchase a piece myself. All of the work on display was beautiful and creative, and with so much variety that there really was something for everyone’s taste.

I spent quite some time deciding which one to get but I eventually went with a beautiful woodland scene by Trevor Wells.

Trevor Wells is a highly thought after Mouth artists who discovered his artistic abilities after an accident playing rugby aged 21, from there he used art as a rehabilitation activity and it has since become a passion.

I love the pieces and it will be hung in my office for all to admire.

I’m off to Brighton this weekend to support my daughter Lucy, who is running the marathon for Woofability!
