Iconic hairdresser Vidal Sassoon dies aged 84

Today has brought the sad news that iconic British hairdresser Vidal Sassoon has passed away aged 84 after losing his battle with Leukaemia.

Vidal Sassoon rose to fame in the sixties when he created a series of fantastic geometric hairstyles for women. His creations include ‘The 5 point cut’ and most famously ‘The Bob’ which became Vidal’s signature cut and is still requested in hair salons today.

Along with creating fashionable hair styles for the ordinary woman Vidal Sassoon also worked with some of the most iconic names in Hollywood with cliental including Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner and Rita Hayworth.

Renowned for revolutionising hairdressing with his series of short ‘wash-and-wear’ hairstyles that proved to be incredibly popular Vidal Sassoon was requested to cut the hair of actress Mia Farrow in 1968 for her role in the film Rosemary’s Baby.

He created a short pixie cut which became an overnight fashion sensation much like the ‘Nancy Kwan’ bob that liberated women across Britain and America to go for the chop. This trendy bob cut was arguably one of Vidal’s most notable looks and a favourite of mine.

Along with creating cutting edge hairstyle which epitomised the era of Cool Britannia, Vidal Sassoon also created a legacy of credible hairdressing with a series of salons and hairdressing academies both here in Britain and in America. During his career he also commissioned a range of styling products that have proved popular amongst professional and amateur hair stylists.

Vidal Sassoon will be greatly missed in the world of hairdressing however I’m sure that this legacy of creating pioneering hairstyles will live on forever.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour- The Making of Harry Potter- If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter films you will no doubt be excited to hear that Warner Bros. Studio- The Making of Harry Potter officially opens this weekend.

The studio tour, which is set to attract thousands of fans daily, gives visitors an insight into how the magical films were created and lets visitors explore some of the most famous sets in the Harry Potter films including Gryffindor’s Common Room, the potions classroom, Dumbledore’s office and even Hagrid’s Hut.

Most excitingly visitors get to enter through the iconic Great Hall, which will be a magical moment for all Harry Potter fans including myself, and exit the tour with a walk along Diagon Alley where they can peer through the shop windows and even purchase their own wand.

Opening the studios to fans is something which I think will be incredibly successful and a real treat for families who have followed Harry and his friends. Having seen a photograph of the Hogwarts Castle model that is featured in the London based studio I’m looking forward to going on the tour to see how much time, effort and creativity went into making such a magnificent series of films.

Woman’s Weekly celebrates 100 years

It’s a great delight to hear that Woman’s Weekly, the weekly magazine for adult women is celebrating 100 years of fantastic work.

Created in 1911 the magazine has become renowned for its relatable content which covers all areas of interest. From crafts, family life, what to do out in the garden, health advice which we can trust, delicious recipes, real life stories and fashion advice for mature ladies.

womans weekly 100 yearsFor many Woman’s Weekly has become somewhat of an institution. Subscription has been passed from generation to generation and with such a wealth of history behind it the magazine has seen lasting success which continues to grow.

In its celebratory 100 year edition readers are treated to a collector’s reprint of the first ever edition.  The publication also relives some of its highlights from the past 100 years, including features such as fashion throughout the decades and the magazines most memorable ad campaigns which are great to remise over.

Like many of Woman’s Weekly other readers I am thrilled that the magazine is celebrating such a milestone. Here’s to 100 more years of great reading for great women.
