The world’s oldest tennis tournament, The Championship, Wimbledon begins its 126th tournament in South West London today. The only Grand Slam to be played on grass, Wimbledon is the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world and a sporting event which I particularly look forward too.

Kick starting Wimbledon 2012 Men’s Singles is last year’s Champion, Novak Djokovic, who is currently seeded number one. Djokovic started play at 1pm against Juan Carlos Ferrero on Centre Court whilst the six times Wimbledon Champion, Roger Federer, commenced play on Court One against Albert Ramos. The Women’s Single are also underway as the female world number one, Maria Sharapova, plays Anastasia Rodionova.

As the players preparing for their first Wimbledon matched sports fans are looking forward to a fortnight of exceptional tennis.  I’ve always looked forward to the annual Wimbledon fortnight, much more than any other Grand Slam and that’s probably because Wimbledon is so steeped in history and is quintessentially British.

Traditionally spectators have enjoyed strawberries and cream whilst watching play, a tradition which I don’t see ending anytime soon and the players wear their brightest whites. The Wimbledon Royal Box is often occupied by members of the Royal Family too, who always amp up the excitement; a visit from the newly married Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last year added a touch of joy.

Who knows which royal faces will be present this year, or which tennis aces will go home as Wimbledon champions 2012; it’s far too early to make any assumptions on who will be triumphant, although a British win for Andy Murray would be prefect for the summer of sport in London 2012.

However, I’m sure that the Wimbledon roof will most probably come into play at some point during the tournament if the past couple of weeks of gloomy weather are anything to go by but it wouldn’t be Wimbledon without a little rain.

Watch Wimbledon on the BBC and via the Red Button. Alternatively keep up to date with scores and matched on Wimbledon’s official website or Twitter page.

Annette's websites of the week

www.wimbledon.com – The official Wimbledon website

Wimbledon-logoWimbledon is in full swing and as the finals arrive this weekend I am sure that the excitement will hit fever pitch. I’ve been following Wimbledon online this year as with a busy schedule it is difficult to watch every match.

The team at Wimbledon have updated their official Twitter site to keep followers informed on the latest scores, weather delays and even celebrity guests. Wimbledon’s official website is also worth checking out for details on matches, news from the tournament, official photographs, tickets and much more.

www.wrvs.org.uk  – Women’s Royal Voluntary Services

Earlier this week I blogged about the ‘Gold Age Power List’ which directed me to the WRVS website. I have to say that it’s a wonderful website. With the tag line of ‘positive about age, practical about life’ and a really welcoming landing page I felt compelled to give the site some of my time.

Already knowing a little about the WRVS as a voluntary service, I knew that their credentials – offering voluntary help to support independent living amongst the elderly, were something that I would connect with immediately.

Like all charity websites there are ways to get involved with the WRVS online. But this particular site offers much more, with everything from a blog, to real stories and a memory wall which allows users to upload old photographs. I think that the site feels very much like a community and one which is great to get involved with- Most definitely worth having a look into.

Virginia’s new iPad– Youtube Video-

This video really brought a smile to my face. Featuring Virginia, a 100 year old lady who is getting to grips with her iPad.

I read that Virginia’s family suggested she got an iPad to enable her to start reading again. After suffering from poor vision she was struggling to read from normal paperback books. However, the bright light of an iPad enabled her to relive her passion for literature.

The video is a great example showing that elderly people can enjoy the perks of modern technology as much as anybody else. Brilliant!

Wimbledon 2011- The perfect summer treat-Summertime Champagne and Jelly

Wimbledon is well and truly underway. I am sure that many of you were happy to see Andy Murray cruise through to third round yesterday making him one step closer to the grand slam final.

Although the weather has been a little unpredictable, and the Wimbledon roof has had to be used. I thought that it would be great chance to share a lovely recipe that is perfect for Wimbledon celebrations- rain or shine.

Summertime Champers and Jelly is the ultimate in summer indulgence. I love to include summer fruits when I make this summer time treat; strawberries would be great, and of course very in tune with Wimbledon.

This charming recipe will go down perfectly at the Wimbledon final; I’ll be making a ‘practice’ portion this weekend too… Enjoy!

Keeping up with who’s through at Wimbledon along with all the action can be a challenge, especially if you are busy during the day.

Thankfully BBC have churned out a fabulous ‘Today at Wimbledon’ program documenting  day one of the 2011 grand slam, which saw defending champion Rafael Nadal, Britain’s No. 1 Andy Murray and 7 time ladies champion Venus William through to the second round.

Today at Wimbledon is set to be aired every evening throughout the tournament to keep you up to date with all of the Wimbledon highlights. Enjoy!

Tesco Strawberry & Clotted Cream sandwiches to celebrate Wimbledon

I had to laugh this morning when I read that Tesco have launched a strawberries and clotted cream sandwich.

The bizarre sandwich was supposedly invented to celebrate the quintessential British summertime; it’s even packed in a Union Jack designed packet. I’m sure Tesco are hoping Wimbledon spectators will be stopping off to buy one just before entering Centre Court, but I’m not convinced.

I adore strawberries and cream, however, I’m not sure that making the classic summertime snack into a sandwiching filling is the most appropriate way to celebrate Wimbledon or British summer.

So the big question is will you be including Tesco’s latest sandwich into your lunchtime menu? We all seem to think not, but I would love to hear your thoughts.

And another thing… What is your favourite ‘bizarre’ sandwich choice? Leave a comment to let me know.

McIlory enjoys record breaking victory at US Open as Wimbledon 2011 gets under way

Rory McIloryIt’s a bright day for sport as Wimbledon starts today and golf fans will be basking in glory after Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy made a record breaking victory at the US Open last night.

I am so pleased for 22 year old Rory, who is now the youngest US Open champion since Bobby Jones is 1923. His record breaking win saw him score an unbelievable -16 under par score. It’s great to see him succeed so marvellously since a tiresome defeat at the Masters earlier this year.

Rory dedicate the victory to his Dad, which I can only presume was the most fantastic Father’s Day gift. What a fabulous victory for the Rory dubbed the ‘next Tiger Woods’- Congratulations!

On this side of the Atlantic players and spectators have got their fingers crossed for sunshine at Wimbledon, which starts today. The oldest tennis tournament in the world, and the only grand slam played on grass is a favourite of mine as it’s a sure way of telling that summer is in full swing.

wimbledonI’m not edging my beats on who will win this early on. Although it would be great for Andy Murray to triumph he’s got some stiff competition from the likes of Nadal and Federer.

Of course, Wimbledon means lots of traditional British tea’s… strawberries and cream, and we mustn’t forget the champagne.

If you’re off to Wimbledon have a fabulous time. I would recommend having a read of the official Wimbledon website which has some handy hint including how to get there and a great easy access guide for disabled guest. Enjoy.
