I had to share this video because it’s hard to believe that the yoga instructor who is cradling herself into some of the most difficult and demanding positions is in fact a 93 year old lady called Tao Porchon-Lynch.

The New Yorker who recently underwent surgery for a hip replacement and was later told that she wouldn’t be able to practice yoga again shocked her students and doctors by returning to her studio to teach the ancient practice like someone who is half age (if not younger).

The incredible Tao Porchon-Lynch was presented with a Guinness World Record earlier this week for officially being the Oldest Yoga Instructor in the world which truly is remarkable. A fantastic story that proves ‘age really is just a number’ as the Telegraph so nicely phrased it.

My weekly ‘Calling all Ladies!’ e-mail from The Lady Magazine has possibly made my day with its link to the article ‘The Ruff Guide to Yoga’.

The article reckons that the doggie yoga trend, which is currently huge in America, will soon hit the UK meaning that your tranquil yoga classes may soon have the added addition of doggie companions.

You may or may not be aware that I have two boisterous dogs myself, Summer and Toffee, who are full of life and bounding with energy, far too much for a class which focuses on balance, calmness and tranquillity, which is why I find doggie yoga so amusing.

Having said that my daughter’s dog, Portia, who is a prim and proper pooch may be the perfect fit and I’d love to see her have a go, especially if she could manage some of the yoga positioned posted by The Lady.

Fantastic story for a Friday afternoon- have a great Bank Holiday Weekend.

Helen Mirren wins ‘Body of the Year’- Getting into shape tips!

The coveted ‘Body of the Year’ winner was announced today and what a great delight to see that 66 year old movie star Helen Mirren took the title.

The British actress, who is one of my favourites, placed top and beat competition from supermodel Elle Macpherson, fashionable singer Cheryl Cole and Pippa Middleton who stunned the nation in her beautiful bridesmaid dress at the royal wedding.

Helen’s win is great news for all ladies over 55 and proves that you really can get into shape at any age and feel the benefits.

So what’s the easiest way to get a body like Helen? Personally I avoid the gym and instead stay active whilst spending time with my family and friends and of course enjoying the outdoors.

Here are my top tips for getting into shape and staying healthy.

  • Walking– The great outdoors is the perfect place to keep fit. Most people immediately presume that if you go outside you must go running. This really isn’t true. For me there is nothing better than a long walk around down the canal. I take my dogs along too who are energetic enough to make a good pace. It’s a good idea to invite a friend or neighbour along for a walk, as the company is pleasant and makes it more enjoyable and less like a chore. Finally summer is a great time to start walking as the evening are light and airy making going for a stroll a lovely way to unwind.

  • Yoga- We have a Yoga instructor who comes into the office every week for an hour long session with staff. I really enjoy the aspect of strengthening my body through yoga, as the process is actually more about meditation and disciplining breathing than exercise. I recommend Yoga for gaining a greater sense of well-being within yourself.

  • Wii Fit- What a fun way to stay fit! With a selection of activities to choose from there is plenty of variety depending on how you feel. Even better my whole family enjoys playing on the Wii including my grandchildren whose favourite’s games are tennis, golf and bowling. Admittedly they are much better than me but taking part is that counts.

douglas mcmillanI’m sure that many of you have heard about the latest fitness craze ‘Zumba’. I’ve not tried it myself but I’ve heard that the classes are tremendous fun, incorporating Latin dance moves with aerobics.

Local charity Douglas Macmillan, who provide care for local people suffering from long term or terminal illnesses, are hosting a Zumbathon event at Staffordshire University on 14th August, which hopes to  raise money and awareness of the charity.

I am sure that many of you are wondering what a Zumbaton is. Don’t worry I asked the same question too. And I’m told that it’s an extended version of a normal Zumba class, with lots of participants getting involved to show what a great way Zumba is to keep fit and have a good time.

If you’d like to get involved you can visit Douglas Mcmillian’s facebook page, website or their Twitter for updates- I’m told that entering is free but a donation would be greatly appreciated. No excuses to not get involved.

Here at Bath-Knight keeping fit and feeling healthy is of great importance. I blogged yesterday about feeling great after 50 this is generally due to living a healthy lifestyle. Although I don’t Zumba I do get to walk with my dogs a lot and recently trained for the Edinburgh MoonWalk.

Furthermore at Bath-Knight we’ve enrolled in yoga classes for the whole team to encourage some light exercise during the week. For me yoga is a great way to build strength but as it’s so calming I find it a great way to end a busy day.

How do you stay fit and healthy? I’d love to know what classes are out there, which people enjoy and would recommend.
